While Red Dead Redemption 2 is clearly a game that we think highly of here at DualShockers , it’s not one that is infallible by any means. In fact, since its release this past Friday, the most common complaint that I have heard not only from some of my friends but fellow writers here at DualShockers is that Red Dead Redemption 2 is far too slow and plodding. Even after getting past the game’s initial opening hours and having the world start to open up, traveling from one location to another takes far too long, animations are too slow, and there’s not the typical intuitiveness that streamlines many of the systems and mechanics that you might find in other open-world games.
On a corner in Blackwater, John comes across a reverend ranting about the evils of alcohol and calling for men to give it up in order to obtain true freedom in their lives. The game gives you two options: warn the reverend so that he can move on alive and well, or kill him for a pile of cash. It’s as simple as walking up to the reverend (who will greet John in a cloyingly friendly manner), and use whatever facet of John’s arsenal to put the reverend down in the street like a dog. When you have a bit of extra cash you can part with, my suggestion would be to spend some of that money and put it towards upgrading the camp’s food, ammo, and medical stashes early, and each of them can be upgraded a few times for better quality items, such as improved tonics to boost your Health and Stamina, or more powerful weaponry like fire bottles and different ammo types. The more you put into the camp, the more you get, so don’t miss out on expanding its uses while exploring the world and completing missions.
Though the story of Red Dead Redemption 2 is thrilling and action-packed in its own right, it’s all enveloped in a world that is rich in depth and detail, and not taking a chance to step back and appreciate the sheer skill that went into crafting the impeccably-made world of Red Dead Redemption 2 would be missing out on one of the game’s best qualities.
As you spend time with your horse, you’ll be able to increase its stamina and health the more that you ride it and care for it, such as feeding it, brushing it, and calming it when it’s frightened or startled. However, you can also unlock new abilities and tricks in Red Dead Redemption 2 once you increase the bond with your horse at certain levels, such as rearing and a quick turn maneuver to avoid danger ahead.
Now, while I enjoy that Red Dead Redemption 2 has built in so many things that force you to slow down, I think it’s important to note that this probably isn’t something I would want to see from every video game in existence. Trust me, I enjoy how streamlined most other games are now as much as the next guy. But in Red Dead Redemption 2 , I think I’ve started to see early on in my playthrough the larger purpose that Rockstar has with all of these added elements to the game.

The most controversial games created by Rockstar have to be their Manhunt series. The first Manhunt was released in 2003 and seemed destined for damnation from the beginning. A stealth based horror game, Manhunt requires you to play as the main character James Earl Cash, a death row inmate. In order to progress through the game, you had to murder gang members, with the method of murder becoming quite graphic and obscene, in ways never seen before on any platform. It included things like suffocating people with plastic bags to the use of blunt force trauma. Manhunt created many problems for Rockstar due to its graphic nature. There were reports of a split in the company, with many people worried about how dark the game was. However, Rockstar was no stranger to controversy at the time, receiving a lot of attention over their previous GTA releases. However, Manhunt was even worse. The game was it was banned in New Zealand and confiscated in Germany. It received even more negative press when it was implicated in a UK murder, although the game was eventually absolved of all involvement. What Rockstar has built with Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t just a vast world of splendor and beauty within which they have place random mission markers and enemy bases to go clear. Instead, this is a place that they’re legitimately wanting you to live in. Can it be tedious at times? Sure. But more often than not, I think it gives me a stronger sense of intimacy with both Arthur and this setting of the Wild West, and that’s something I haven’t felt in an Open World Games Walkthrough-world title in quite awhile.
