What Rockstar has built with Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t just a vast world of splendor and beauty within which they have place random mission markers and enemy bases to go clear. Instead, this is a place that they’re legitimately wanting you to live in. Can it be tedious at times? Sure. But more often than not, I think it gives me a stronger sense of intimacy with both Arthur and this setting of the Wild West, and that’s something I haven’t felt in an Open world games exploration-world title in quite awhile.
The sense of discovery that video games offer is a feeling almost unmatched by any other form of entertainment. Deep down, you know that a developer went out of their way to create a mystery for the player to solve, or to put in a cool reference to another work of art. But in the heat of the moment, in the thrill of the chase, you feel like a detective pulling at a thread, ready to unveil whatever may be behind the curtain. There are few developers better at eliciting this feeling than Rockstar , and the Easter Eggs in Red Dead Redemption 2 certainly keep their reputation alive. With Red Dead Redemption having had several clear references to the John Ford classic, there’s no denying that The Searchers ‘ influences on the Western film genre have worked their way into Rockstar’s work, and it will be interesting to see if Red Dead Redemption 2 continues on what Ford and John Wayne delivered with their seminal 1956 film.
All right so dig this. You’re a vampire cowboy. That’s a relatively simple, but brilliant idea, right? All of your gear resembles old-fashioned weaponry, but with a steampunk redesign. Plus there are vampire powers as well like draining enemies of blood for health. Like most vampire games the brooding gothic atmosphere may a bit too overbearing at times and it doesn’t nail every mechanic set forth, but it’s a really fun game regardless. Sure, there are highlights and moments in everyone’s life that you think back on frequently but most of the time, what you do in a day isn’t exciting. With Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘s prior trailers featuring staggering cinematography on par with that of the striking images and scenes that There Will Be Blood features, Anderson’s film is a notable departure from the typical “Western.” However, there’s no denying that the film’s deep exploration of a volatile turn of the century in America is one that shares some similarities with the time period that the Red Dead titles have taken place in, along with featuring a brilliant (and terrifying) character in Day-Lewis’ role as Daniel Plainview.
Basically, mechanics are what makes the game you play more transparent. Understanding the game takes a lot of time and it does not have to begin with you going through a crash course about it. Just try to understand the basics of the game, for example, every MOBA game has some sort of slang every now and then and learning it can be useful so you can follow it in the future. Also, understanding how the game works, how to farm and how to utilize the map etc. is also very important. Once you have grasped the basics of the game, then you can move on to the next stage in which you actually implement all of your knowledge into the game. There’s going to be a little crevice, eventually leading to a cave. In there, you’ll find stone statues, seven in total. Taking another look at the cave paintings, you’ll find that the statues in the painting are accompanied by eagles with varying numbers of tail feathers. By forcing you to slow down and complete duties that seem lackluster, you slowly start to feel more present in this world and grow closer to your own version of Arthur. If Red Dead Redemption 2 was just all about riding around the West and shooting up saloons with your revolver, you’d likely feel disconnected from your avatar. The game then just becomes a power trip and the character that you end up playing is just an amplified version of your own wants and desires. Doing simple chores though such as chopping wood, skinning animals and dragging them back to my horse, and donating to the gang’s larger pool of money has made me feel more of a bond with Arthur than any other character I’ve played as in recent memory. My bond with the character thus far has been established in these small moments, not the large ones.
