As I was browsing my way throughout some great Red Dead Redemption 2 content this weekend, I stumbled across some people harassing a guy who was clearly making up fake spoilers for the game and trying to fabricate leaks for the upcoming Red Dead Online . Then, I thought to myself; “were there any leaks we didn’t believe that turned out to be true?” and got to researching. I finally discovered one that we should have believed all the way back from 2016.
The leak, which came from “u/reddeadinsider” at the time, accurately predicted the name of the protagonist long before it was publicly revealed through the game’s second trailer over a year afterward : “You play a gang leader named Arthur.” I think the most interesting thing about reading accurate leaks from years before release is that you get to see all the things they changed in between now and then, and there are a few details in here that I don’t recall seeing them make it into the final game.

TB is a very contagious disease that spreads when an infected person coughs or sneezes, and only a few droplets of spit are required for infection. And, in case you weren’t paying attention, Arthur is hacking all over the place by the end of the story. Yet no one became sick. The epilogue catches us up on various characters’ fates, and not a single one of them has passed from tuberculosis. In a massive (and occasionally daunting) open-world game made by hundreds of people over thousands and thousands of work hours, I sometimes nestle into one or two areas or goals to make the game feel more manageable. It usually starts out as focus on the story and side quests that interest me; from there, maybe I focus on filling out the map or tracking down secrets. By the end of my time with a game on that scale, one of those tasks triumphs over the others and becomes my favorite element in the game.
